Having introduced the author, investigated the context and significance, discussed the intent and the structure, and analyzed some of the major key elements of The Republic, it is suitable to turn to the text itself and analyze Book One more thoroughly.

As one might imagine, with Book Six as the pinnacle, Book One acts as a foundation. It sets the stage for all that will unfold in the rest of The Republic. As Socrates tells us at the beginning of Book Two, Book One is essentially “a prelude” to the entire project.
