Greeting Friends,
You’re invited to the inaugural meeting of the Tsundoku Reading Society. I look forward to hanging out with you to discuss the C. S. Lewis’s epiphanic essay, "De Descriptione Temporum."
The essay was originally a lecture given at Cambridge University on November 29th, 1954, his 56th birthday. It was his inaugural lecture after accepting the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature specifically created for him at Magdalene College, Cambridge in June of that same year. Prior to that, Lewis had taught at Magdalen College, Oxford for 29 years, beginning in 1925. What many people don’t realize is that at Oxford, he had only been a Fellow and tutor in English Language and Literature. At Cambridge, Lewis became a full professor.
I hope you’re ready to dive in and discuss this great essay. There’s a lot to unpack, but my hope is that we’ll scratch the surface and open up new paradigms of understanding about literature, history, and culture.
Our meeting will start at 4:00 pm PT / 7:30 pm ET and we’ll run for approximately 90 minutes, depending on your interests and conversation. Feel free to prepare your favorite beverage and snack (we’re not formal in this regard) and come ready for winsome and meaningful conversation. Also, if you’re able, please reply to this email and let me know whether or not you’ll be joining us this afternoon/evening.
If you’re interested in trialing the Tsundoku Reading Society, you can subscribe now with a 20% discount. You’ll also be entered in the drawing for a chance to win The Complete C. S. Lewis Signature Classics: Boxed Set (7 volumes). A name will be selected by a random generator and I’ll announce the winner later this evening.
Also for the month of June, I’m offering 20% OFF a Paid Subscription.
